On July 24, 2023, USC Trojan basketball phenom and NBA prospect Lebron James Jr. suffered a sudden cardiac arrest during practice. 1 The 18-year-old athlete was immediately treated in the team’s practice facility by medical staff then rushed to the hospital for continued care. After determining that “Bronny” has a congenital birth defect known as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a condition in which the left ventricle of the heart becomes thickened and stiff leading to reduced cardiac output, he was soon discharged home with uncertainty as to his return to sport. This entire unfortunate situation got me thinking. Bronny James is an elite athlete ranking in the top 20 best prospective basketball players coming into college this season. Conservative treatments for musculoskeletal disorders, specifically temporomandibular disorders (TMD), should always be considered as the first treatment option. Physical therapy (PT) is a well-known conservative treatment option for many musculoskeletal disorders. Unfortunately, many dental professionals are unaware of the role and treatment options that PT provides for effectively treating TMD. The purpose of this commentary is to highlight the issue of dentist being unaware of PT as a conservative option for TMD, to discuss the importance of a multidisciplinary approach for treating TMD, to briefly inform the readers of the role of PT in treating TMD, and to provide helpful resources for dentist including where to refer patients with TMD for PT.
